Not only do we have the new increased lava flow into the ocean happening, but there has been new and unusual activity in the Halema'uma'u crater up in Volcanoes National park. After the opening of a new, glowing vent in the crater wall several days earlier which began spewing greatly increased levels of Sulfur dioxide gas, a sudden violent ejection of gas occured which shot rocks and debris hundreds of feet into the air and increased the Sulfur Dioxide emissions to even greater concentrations, as much as 10 times normal.

Awesome Quicktime movie of Halema`uma`u crater

Conditions provided a rare view of active lava in the Halema`uma`u vent. This photograph is looking down into the cavity, and gives a sense of how deep the lava was. The small area of active, circulating lava was about 100 meters below the crater floor. Close-up view of the active lava surface. Lava was emerging in the upper right and flowing at a remarkable rate towards the lower left, where it would disappear from sight.
