Surfing Beaches in Hilo and Puna

While surf spots in the Hilo and Puna districts of the Big Island might not have the world class barrels and long lines that some of the more famous spots on the other islands feature,  we still have lots of fun spots with challenging waves for all surfing styles and preferences. Better yet, our waves are so consistent on this side that a day with no surf is almost unheard of. Best of all, the line up is usually uncrowded and friendly.

  • Pohoiki surf beach, at Isaac Hale Park

Off the boat ramp, its an easy paddle out through the volcanically heated shore waters to the fun easy rights of first bay.  Only thing to worry about here is staying off the reef on the far right. Take off just to the left of it for the best rides.

The central reef breaks the bay into 2 main sections, First Bay and Second Bay. Second bay is usually a foot or two bigger, thicker and faster than first bay. Pohoiki will take a northeast, east or south swell. When it's breaking well you can get some barrels in either bay. Beyond second bay and around a little point is Third Bay, definitely not the spot for beginners. It is usually another couple of feet or so bigger than Second Bay, and barrels hard into deep water right in front of a cliff. Look for the three breaks from left to right in the following pictures: First Bay, Second Bay and Third Bay.

Looking from first bay to second, with third breaking in the far distance.

Body boarders on the inside, surf boarders on the outside. And count how few!

Just another small fun day. Nothing to write home about.

However we do have our moments. The following were on Christmas Day 2007.

This break is directly outside First Bay, breaking off the point on the left. The break is called elevators, as the take off has a wicked drop. With luck, skill and timing you can cut back to the right about halfway into the bay and get a nice noseride all the way to the beach!

To the left of this is a heavy fast tube called Dead Trees, favorite of body boarders and short boarders. This link to a very local website will take you to lots more pictures of Pohoiki surfers and ambience:
